Common Types of Dental Emergencies and What to Do
Typically, dental emergencies should not be ignored, and neither should you delay seeking treatment if you encounter such a situation. But, at times, it can be difficult to recognize the signs of a dental emergency, not to mention that people are generally not in a hurry to see a dentist.
The average time taken by people in-between dental appointments is about three years, and so it is common for dental emergencies to occur in-between dentist visits. That being so, here are some dental emergencies to look out for.
Toothache
There are many reasons why you may experience a toothache. For instance, you may have a pulp infection that requires emergency dental care. Unfortunately, once toothache starts, it can get progressively worse, leaving you in more pain, and pain is never a good sign. While you wait to see an emergency dentist, you can seek some relief by using a cold compress. If you have some swelling in the area, then it means the problem requires urgent treatment, more than usual.
Chipped or Cracked Tooth
A chipped or cracked tooth often happens when you bite down too hard on a hard object. This can also happen by accident or if you grind or clench your teeth forcefully. In any case, you’ll need emergency dental care. In the meantime, rinse your mouth with warm water and also rinse and preserve any tooth fragments. You can also apply a cold compress to relieve any pain and swelling.
Loose or Knocked Out Tooth
If your tooth has become loose due to some kind of impact, it’s important to keep it in its socket so it doesn’t fall out. However, if the tooth has already been knocked loose, then try to locate it, and place it back in its socket or store it in a glass of milk. Immediately seeking dental care will increase the chances of saving the tooth.
Lost Filling or Crown
If you have lost a crown or filling, then you may need to have it treated quickly so you can restore your tooth’s optimal appearance and function. This also helps reduce the chances of an infection entering the cavity.
What to Do When You Have a Dental Emergency
If you’re dealing with a toothache or teeth that are broken, chipped, loose, or missing, then you need emergency dental care. Additionally, soft tissue injuries and a missing crown or filling can also warrant emergency dental care.
